The European Union called on the various Tunisian parties to maintain calm, avoid violence and preserve the country’s stability, according to Italian news agency AKI
This position was stated by the spokeswoman for the European Union’s High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell, in which she confirmed that Brussels is closely following the latest developments in the Tunisian scene.
“We call on all concerned parties in Tunisia to respect the constitution, institutions and the rule of law,” said Nabila Masrali, in response to questions from the Italian news agency (AKI) today.
The Europeans view Tunisia as the only country that escaped the turmoil of the so-called Arab Spring and succeeded in completing the “democratic transition” phase, which prompted them to inject huge sums to the authorities there to help them develop multiple sectors, including infrastructure, education and youth empowerment, and job creation. Strengthening security, controlling borders and dealing with the immigration file.

Tunisian President Kais Saied had taken several decisions, including suspending the parliament, which is controlled by Ennahda movement, dismissing Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and restoring the leadership of the executive authority, in the wake of widespread popular movements in protest against the corruption of the ruling class and the mismanagement of the Covid-19 epidemic crisis.
The economic situation in the country is deteriorating. For its part, the Ennahda movement began a sit-in in front of Parliament, noting that what is happening in the country is nothing but a military coup.
