On Monday, July 26, the Tunisian General Labor Union issued a statement regarding the recent measures taken by the President of the Republic on July 25, 2021, and this is the full text of the statement:

Following the exceptional measures taken by the President of the Republic in accordance with Article 80 of the Constitution to prevent imminent danger and in order to restore the normal functioning of the wheels of the state and in light of the outbreak of the Covid-19, the National Executive Office of the Tunisian General Labor Union, convened in an emergency:

It is noteworthy that the crisis in which the country has deteriorated has been previously warned by the Union many times and its assessment has been confirmed in the preamble of the National Initiative. The spread of corruption, the looting of public money, the rampant manifestations of inconvenience over the law and its violation of the rule of law in one phase, and the adaptation of legislation and agencies, including the judiciary, in the interest of influential lobbies and parties that desecrated rights and the country and mortgaged them in a dangerous religious policy that neglected national sovereignty. The time has come to bear responsibilities and end this era that put Tunisia on a shank from fire.

The Union  salutes the peaceful social and popular movements that were launched in many areas and formed a link in the chain of accumulating popular and social struggle in Tunisia and condemns the repressive method adopted by the governments towards them, which led to the violation of freedoms and the arrest of many activists and almost returned the country to the square of tyranny.

The union insisted on the need to ensure adherence to constitutional legitimacy in any action taken at this delicate stage the country is going through in order to finally secure respect for the constitution and the continuation of the democratic process and restore the country’s stability and recover its capacity for construction and progress.

The union emphasizes that the exceptional measures taken by the President should be accompanied by a set of constitutional guarantees, foremost among which is the need to control the objectives of the exceptional measures away from expansion, diligence and excessive focus, and to determine the duration of the application of the exceptional measures and to expedite their termination so that they do not turn into a permanent procedure and a return in the deadlines to normal functioning and state institutions, as well as ensuring Respect rights and freedoms, including economic and social rights, without division, while resorting to democratic and participatory mechanisms in any political change within the framework of a clear participatory roadmap that outlines goals, means, and a calendar, reassures the people and dispels fears.

The union salutes the military institution and calls on all parties to distance it from political quarrels, believing in the nobility of this institution, its patriotism and its unconditional adherence to protecting the security of the country and people. It also stresses the review of the judiciary’s measures to ensure its independence.

It rejects the resort of any party, regardless of its position, position or motive to violence, and at the same time expresses its absolute rejection of the policy of recovery or settling accounts and ensuring a peaceful exit from this delicate and difficult stage.
Long live Tunisia

Glory and eternity to the martyrs
