Tunisian producers are asked to submit their films to the national selection committee which will choose the work that will be a candidate for the preliminary selections of the Oscar for Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

The Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image (CNCI) invites producers whose films meet the criteria defined by the Academy of Oscars to submit a written request to the CNCI’s registry office at the Cité de la culture in Tunis. The deadline for submission is Thursday 30 September 2021 at 17:00.

The CNCI stresses that “the application must be accompanied by supporting documents confirming the eligibility of the film” without mentinnerating the new rules put in place by the Academy.
The Center calls on film professionals to follow the following link to consult the rules governing the International Feature Film category
The film representing Tunisia at the Oscars in the category of “The Oscar for Best International Film” is selected by a commission organized under the aegis of the CNCI. The list of members of the national commission for this year has not yet been revealed.
The selected Tunisian film is then submitted (before November 1, 2021) to the Academy’s selection committee, which will choose films from various candidate countries for the Oscar for Best International Film.

The 94th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022. Films eligible for the “Academy Award for Best International Film” competition must be feature films, released between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021.
Due to the closure of theaters, films whose release has been cancelled and which have been released on VOD are exceptionally eligible for the Oscars. Tunisian films released in cinemas abroad, with the exception of American cinemas, are also eligible.
The Oscars Committee will take into account the conditions applied in each candidate country, in connection with the closure of cinemas. This procedure, in force since the previous edition of the Oscars in 2021, will also be valid in 2022.
Each year, all countries are invited to submit the film that best represents their cinematography, according to the criteria defined by the Academy of Oscars.

A foreign film defines any feature film in a dominant foreign language, other than English, that is produced outside the United States of America. The application also covers animated films or documentaries.
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, changes were made in 2021, by the Academy of Oscars by relaxing the eligibility criteria. Other criteria for the Oscar category for Best International Film, relating to diversity and inclusion, have also been announced and will be taken into account from the year 2024.
