“The extraordinary measures taken are part of the implementation of the constitution and respond to a broad popular will, especially in light of political, economic and social crises and widespread corruption and bribery,” the presidency said.
Saied’s actions included the dismissal of the Prime Minister, the freezing of parliament and the removal of the executive branch.
“The president warned against attempts by some to spread rumours and promote fallacies about the reality of the situation in Tunisia,” the statement said, adding that there is nothing to worry about the values of freedom, justice and democracy that Tunisia shares with American society.
“The president pointed out that he has adopted the will of the people, their issues and concerns and will not accept injustice, infringement or apostasy of rights,” he said, stressing that Tunisia will remain a moderate, open and committed country with its strategic partnerships with its historical friends.”
“He stressed that the United States of America is committed to its strategic friendship with Tunisia and supports its democratic path, and looks forward to the next steps that the President will take at the governmental and political levels,” the statement said.
