Tunisian President Kais Saied said during meetings with other foreign delegations that “Tunisia is a sovereign and sovereign country for the people, and there is no room for interference in its choices, which stem from popular will,” the Tunisian presidency said in a statement.
“Tunisia does not accept to be in the seat of the student who receives lessons and then waits for the mark to be assigned to him or the grade that will be on his assessment card,” the presidential statement said.
“The sovereignty of the Tunisian state and the choices of its people have not been discussed at all and will not be the subject of negotiations with anyone,” the statement said.
Earlier Friday, Saied said the situation in the country required extraordinary measures under the constitution to correct it, save the state and respond to broad popular will, without harming the gains made.
Saied said during his meeting on Friday with the Eu’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Burrell, that these measures will be followed by steps to strengthen the country’s democratic path, stressing Tunisia’s strong commitment to further strengthening its strategic partnership with European space, and its firm belief in the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law it shares with the European Union.
For his part, the EU’s High Representative Joseph Burrell said after meeting President Saied that he was keen to visit Tunisia at this important time to understand what is happening, and to prove that it is an important partner of the European Union in all fields of common interest, adding that the EU is more involved with the Tunisian people and the Tunisian authorities to support their options in building a lasting, effective and democratic democracy in the service of the people.
“I have codified the message I have received from President Kais Saied and I will share this message with my colleagues in the Council of Ministers, the Commission and the European Parliament and with all my colleagues in European institutions,” Burrell said after meeting Saied.
The representative of the European Union concluded that ultimately concrete actions and measures would determine how the Union could better support democracy, stability and prosperity in Tunisia.
President Saied is expected to announce his plan for the next phase in the coming days, his political advisor Walid Hajjam told Reuters, which could include amending the political calendar and suspending the current constitution in exchange for an interim system of powers.
