The President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed met Thursday evening, at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, with directors and executives of the department. The meeting was devoted to monitoring the security situation in the country in light of the surge in cases of contamination by the coronavirus, indicates a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.

On this occasion, the Head of State insisted on the need to take all the necessary measures, in particular in regions where the number of contaminations is very high. He, however, recommended to take into consideration the economic and social situation of citizens.

In a video posted on the presidency’s Facebook page, the head of state stressed that the current health situation is the result of “ill-conceived choices”. He reported violations of the rules in terms of measures to combat the spread of the pandemic taken by the authorities. “It is against the law to decree a curfew during a press conference, it is a prerogative falling to the Head of State or to the governors who have regulatory power in their regions”, he said, referring to the press conference held on June 25, by the government spokesperson.

And to add: The curfew decreed on the whole country has not brought concrete results. “At this stage, he insisted, we must take courageous and sure decisions without taking into account the parties which only plunder Tunisia”. President Saïed, in this sense, stressed that security leaders must encourage the political class to take “realistic decisions”.

Before going to the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, Kaïs Saïed had inaugurated a new resuscitation pavilion at the military hospital in Tunis. With 106 additional deaths recorded on June 30, Tunisia has crossed the threshold of 15,000 deaths caused by the coronavirus.
