The Presidency of the People’s Assembly announced in a statement published by speaker Rached Ghannouchi, friday evening, October 1, 2021, that “the office of parliament is in a state of permanent assembly,”calling on the deputies of the Council to resume their parliamentary work in the context of calm and full respect for the requirements of the Constitution and the law, and steadfastness in the epic restoration of democracy and its symbol (Tunisian parliament).”

The presidency of the People’s Assembly considered that presidential decision 117, “effectively disrupting the Tunisian constitution and centristing the powers of the People’s Assembly and a frightening assembly of all powers in the hands of one individual, which contradicts the bets of the revolution of freedom, dignity and the values of democracy,” calling on “the President of the Republic to retract the decree and lift the freeze on the People’s Assembly and launch a national dialogue that excludes no one to discuss ways out of the serious crisis that threatens the cohesion of the state and the unity of the people.”

In the same statement, the Presidency of the Council held President Kais Saied “fully responsible for the closure of parliament in all its branches and the consequent disruption of the vital interests of the Council and the prevention of employees and currency from performing their professional duty and the heavy responsibility to disrupt the historical landmark of the Bardo Palace and its World Museum and the Tunisian memory of the work of the constituent and parliamentary councils from 1956 to 25 July 2021, pointing out that it has become vulnerable to damage and corruption in the absence of any undertaking and all the council’s facilities and branches, which have not been pledged and maintained for more than 60 days,” it said, adding that this “led to invaluable wholesale losses.”

“It expressed its full support for deputies facing unfair trials on broad charges related to their work or social media posts,” it said.
“Some of them are brought before military courts with no jurisdiction and security prosecutions, where a number of them have been placed under house arrest without judicial decisions, with harassment of their families,”it said.
