Libya, with a population of about 6.5 million, received more than 100,000 doses of the Russian “Sputnik-V” vaccine against the Corona virus, on Sunday, April 3, which is the first shipment to reach the country.
It is expected that more than a million doses of the Corona vaccine will be provided by next Sunday, according to the Libyan Minister of Health Ali Al-Zanati. The National Center for Disease Control records about a thousand new cases of the disease daily, which constitutes a pressure on the health sector, which has been destroyed by years of conflict.
For his part, Prime Minister Abd al-Hamid al-Dbaiba said on Twitter: “The beginning of rain is a drop.” (An Arab proverb)

Another Shipment of “Sputnik V” will Arrive Very Soon

The Minister of Health in the National Unity Government, Ali Al-Zanati, stated that other shipments of the Russian “Sputnik V” vaccine will arrive in the near future, indicating that other batches of this vaccine will arrive successively through the UAE, and that between 300,000 to 400,000 vaccine doses will be provided soon.
Al-Zanati also indicated that the number of doses of the Russian vaccine and other vaccines that will arrive at the country is expected to reach 10 million doses, pointing out that cold rooms for storing vaccines will be provided in the rest of the Libyan cities.
As for distributing the vaccine, priority will be given to workers in isolation centers, the elderly, people suffering from chronic diseases, and workers in various hospitals and health centers, according to the Minister of Health, who announced that he would be the first to receive the vaccine.
In February, the National Center for Disease Control launched an electronic registration campaign to receive the vaccine, which includes everyone over the age of 18, and no details have been released on the number of those who have registered.
Libya has recorded about 200,000 cases of Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic and 2,684 deaths, according to the latest data reported by the center.
The UN-backed Dabaiba government took office last month with a mandate to improve services and prepare for general elections next December.
