The head of the Ennahda movement, Rached Ghannouchi, stressed that Tunisia is threatened by the current economic situation, calling for the need for urgent reforms to overcome the economic and social crisis in the country.

This came in his speech during the economic symposium on the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Ennahda Movement, which was attended by Finance Minister Ali Al-Kaali.

He continued, “Many expectations from the revolution have not been fulfilled, and today we live in an economic and social crisis, and we are consuming more than we produce and have drowned in debts. There is no doubt that this is everyone’s responsibility, and it is time to ask a question about the economic crisis. Is it related to the economic path or the practical practice of the eight successive governments since the revolution?”

Ghannouchi also stressed the need to “work to overcome the economic and social crisis in Tunisia, by conducting an open and transparent dialogue between the state and various actors, to carry out urgent reforms.”

Calling Kais Saied to Run a National Dialogue

Rached Ghannouchi renewed his call to the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, to run the national dialogue, which was called for by the Labor Union, stressing the need to proceed with the necessary economic reforms, including the beating at the hands of corruption.

“Today, there is a need for reform, which should have been launched many years ago, and to take real reform measures that would make the people aware of their situation and aware that production and productivity improvements must be increased in order to increase wages and increase spending,” he said.

The Tunisian General Labor Union had proposed to President Kais Saied in December 2020, an initiative to launch a national dialogue that includes all national and political parties “to find political, economic and social solutions to the current situation in our country.” Saied agreed to this initiative, but no date was set for this dialogue to be conducted.
