The President of the European Council Charles Michel reaffirmed, Friday in Brussels, the support of this institution for the democratic transition process in Tunisia, insisting on  the willingness to provide all the necessary support to Tunisia to meet its economic and health challenges according to the “Tunis Afrique Presse” Agency (TAP).

At the end of his meeting in Brussels with President Kais Saied, the European official explained that “this new phase of bilateral relations is based on shared values ​​and a reciprocal commitment in favor of strengthening political, economic and cultural ties which unite the two shores of the Mediterranean ”.

According to Michel, the exchanges, which took place in a very cordial climate, paid particular attention to youth, education, scientific research, emigration, security and economic relations which are among the structuring subjects of Tunisian-European cooperation for several years.

“The European Council reiterates its long-term commitment alongside Tunisia as well as its willingness to support the country in its efforts to consolidate its democratic institutions and promote a green, competitive economy,” he said in a note distributed to journalists.

It should be mentioned that Charles Michel reviewed the position of the European Council on several regional issues of common interest and praised the positive role played by Tunisia in the Libyan dossier.

For his part, President Kais Saied reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to the development of strategic Tunisia-EU relations, particularly in the political, economic, scientific and cultural fields.

In this context, Saied thanked the European Union for its constant support since 2011, recalling the European contribution of more than three billion euros to support the socio-economic recovery of the country.

The Head of State said he had discussed with the President of the European Council the issue of the socio-economic impact of the crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic and referred to the economic and social reforms necessary to relaunch the economic activity and growth.

The meeting also offered the opportunity to reaffirm Tunisia’s support for the Palestinian people and their just cause and to recall the positive role played by Tunisia in the peaceful settlement of the Libyan crisis.

The President of the Republic returned to Tunisia on Friday evening after a two-day visit to Brussels (June 3-4) to participate in the second Tunisia-EU summit.
