Today, Sunday, August 29, 2021, the Arab Lawyers Union sent an open letter to the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, in which he considered that the authorities’ restriction of the freedom of the former dean of the law firm, Chawki Tabib, and placing him under house arrest; in addition to violating the law, it also violates the rules of humanitarian and international law.

The text of the letter, which JDD Tunisie obtained a copy of, stated that the Arab Lawyers Union affirms “its full confidence in the support of the President of the Republic and its support for the right of the Tunisian people to exercise their freedom, and not to restrict them, and to provide them with all facilities, looking forward to lifting the restrictions on Chawki Tabib, And the necessity of instructing whomever is necessary in order to achieve the interests of lawyers.”

 

 

The union considered that it “sees the renewal movement that Tunisian society is experiencing as an important step on the path to development and recovery; This is in the context of Saied’s courageous decisions, and his tireless efforts to achieve the interests of the Tunisian people,” according to the letter.

Chawki Tabib, the former dean of lawyers and former head of the Anti-Corruption Commission, announced on Tuesday August 24, 2021 that he, through one of his fellow lawyers in Switzerland, had filed a first petition before the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and a second petition before the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, against Ridha Gharsallaoui in charge of managing the affairs of the Ministry of Interior and all those who will be uncovered by the research, “for the crime of enforced disappearance and a number of other crimes committed against him.”

He also filed an appeal petition with the Administrative Court, rescinding the decision to place him under house arrest, and submitting a request to stop its implementation with the first president of the Administrative Court.
