The interest of the United States in the exceptional measures announced by President Kaïs Saïed is undeniable.

After the visit to Tunis of an official delegation led by the Deputy Security Advisor at the White House Jonathan Finer and two congressional senators all received by the head of state, it is the Minister of Foreign Affairs Othman Jerandi arrived a few hours more stubborn in New York to participate in the UN General Assembly, who met the US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland. According to the Tunisian ministry, the number two state department assured that Washington intends to maintain its support for the democratic experiment in Tunisia and is ready to strengthen cooperation in this regard. Nuland stressed that “his country intends to maintain its support for the democratic experience in Tunisia and is ready to strengthen its cooperation with it in order to consolidate the democratic option and strengthen this approach, so as to meet the aspirations of the Tunisian people for development and well-being.” For his part, Othman Jerandi reiterated “Tunisia’s attachment to the achievements of its democratic experience.” He affirmed that “the exceptional measures taken by the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, on July 25, aim to correct the course of this experience, and that the choice of democracy and freedoms is irreversible.

” The situation in Libya was also widely discussed during the meeting. In this regard, both sides expressed their determination to support the process of political settlement in Libya and to implement the terms of the roadmap resulting from the Libyan Dialogue Forum, including the organization of legislative and presidential elections before 24 December.

In the same context, Jerandi and the US Under Secretary of State stressed the need for the rapid withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement and Security Council resolutions.

According to a statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs issued on Tuesday, the meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on the main regional and international issues of the day. Both sides reaffirmed their willingness to intensify consultations on issues dealt with by the UN Security Council.
