It is very likely that the Tunisian General Labor Union, which is the largest trade union organization in the country, would join the July 25 decisions of President Kais Saied. The union defends social groups and workers, and thus shares this interest with President Saied, in addition to being consistent with the president’s tendency to build a new social pattern away from the parties’ calculations.
Noureddine Taboubi said in a media statement on Thursday that the difficult economic and social situation that has exacerbated unemployment and a shortage of jobs requires a mature vision, saying that everyone must be humble and put their feet on the ground.
Taboubi stressed that he is on good terms with the head of state, calling on the latter to listen to everyone who opposes him and those who support him alike.
It is necessary for the Labor Union, which defends the vulnerable and popular groups, to meet the decisions of the twenty-fifth of July. The union has no ambitions for governance and power, unlike political parties. The meetings should be about options and about contents to get out of the impasse that Tunisia is going through and not to share the cake, that is, the spoils of governance. The Union today has no choice but to line up behind the people, because the 25th of July movement is a social and political move in terms of improving living conditions, overthrowing the political system and dissolving Parliament and the project is essentially societal and the union will join with the people in this project.
After the political step that contributed to dismantling the absurd political system that spanned over ten years, the rescue program in the coming period can only be primarily social and economic. As for the Tunisian General Labor Union, President Saied must support his legitimacy with performance, and he must take advantage of the opportunity, because the union’s assistance to the president is not always repeated.
The Union is different from political parties, since it is an organization whose goal is to defend on the national and social line, and it is in the country’s interest to build understandings between the Presidency of the Republic and the Union, as well as agreements with other organizations, because the Union is an inevitable partner and interlocutor.
