In a statement issued Monday, August 16, 2021, Ennahda’s executive office called on the president to lift the freeze on parliament, quickly return to the constitution and end the state of “serious breach”, as it threatens the continuation of our democratic experience, a violation of rights and freedoms, an infringement of the most basic principles of the republic and the separation of power, the statement said.

The movement also stated, the President of the Republic, that political crises are resolved only through dialogue, and that the national responsibility is to preserve the unity of Tunisians and their civil peace, resume the democratic process, protect the country’s higher interests and not involve them in regional and international conflicts that deviate Tunisia from its historical position.

The Executive Office expressed the need and immediateity to appoint the head of a government of national competencies and lift the siege on the headquarters of the prime minister in Kasbah and stop obstructing the public facility, which disrupts the normal functioning of the state

This could result in delays in the conduct of the interests of citizens, she said.

The movement reiterated its rejection of all measures it described as “arbitrary” from being placed under house arrest without judicial authorization, without explanation and in accordance with an “unconstitutional” law, and preventing tens of thousands of Tunisians from travelling on the basis of their professionalism, political or human rights activity, verbal instructions and without all legal guarantees.

It also warned of the disastrous economic and financial implications of the country’s difficult political situation, the escalation of economic risks to the state’s public finances and the state’s fulfilment of its domestic and external obligations.

She called on all political forces and national and human rights organizations to respond to the call for dialogue to defend Tunisian democracy and to address all violations of the fundamental rights of Tunisians.

She urged Ennahda militants and activists to rally around their movement, uphold their principles and not bow to provocations and contribute with all the people to any action that would promote national unity and social solidarity and support the commons and ties between all members of society, the statement said.

Head of Ennahda

Ennahda’s parliamentary bloc said in a statement on Monday (August 16th) that it was following the “arbitrary measures” taken since the announcement of the july 25 decisions and the serious breaches it represented in the interpretation of the constitutional text, including repeated attacks on rights and freedoms, successive travel bans without judicial decisions, placing many citizens under house arrest and referring civilians to military courts.

For its part, she called for a quick exit from the exceptional situation towards the country’s return to normalcy, recourse to the country’s constitution and ordinary laws, respect for the principles of human rights and the preservation of public freedoms by the state and its institutions.

She denounced all arbitrary measures that are not based on judicial decisions and violate legal and constitutional texts, including essentially referring civilians to military courts and placing them under house arrest, to which a number of citizens, including Ennahda leader and former minister Anwar Marouf, are subject to, she said.

She stressed that dialogue is the best way out of the overall crisis in the country, so that Tunisia faces its urgent and future problems within the framework of national unity and the constitution
