Since the postponement of the Francophone Summit, which was to be held on the island of Djerba, Tunisia, next November, a wave of questions has arisen about the reasons behind its postponement until the fall of 2022.
Some assumed that the reasons behind this decision are political rather than organizational, while the Permanent Council of the Summit said that the postponement is related to organizational issues of the Summit.
Unsuitable Political Reality for Holding the Summit
In a tweet posted on his official Twitter page, Canadian journalist étienne Fortin-Gauthier said that the political reality in which Tunisia is currently living is not suitable for holding the Francophone summit, given the setback that the democratic path is witnessing following the recent decisions that were approved, which the journalist described as “dictatorship decisions.”
In the same context, the former President of the Republic, Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, confirmed during an interview yesterday, Tuesday, October 12, 2021 with France 24 channel, that he is proud of the failure to hold the Francophone summit this year in light of the deteriorating political situation in the country, adding that he hopes that the summit will be held next year in better circumstances when the country is in a democratic and participatory situation, not in a coup, as he put it.
Organizational Weakness
Representatives of the member states of the International Organization of la Francophonie reported that the postponement of the summit was due to a weakness in organization. Therefore, it was decided to postpone it in order to hold it in the best conditions next fall.
In a related context, the former diplomat, Tawfiq Wanas, said during a media statement that the postponement of the summit should not create political polemics by political actors who want to create confusion, adding that the decision to postpone has many dimensions and reasons.
It should be noted that this is the second time that the summit, which was supposed to be held in 2020, has been postponed. Previously, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
