On Friday, May 28, Abd al-Latif al-Makki, a leader in the Ennahdha Movement, published a Facebook post, in which he addressed a message to Admiral Kamal Akrout wherein he explained that the democratic experience in Tunisia is still emerging and that his involvement in the world of politics will bring him into conflict with his fellow retired officers Who may also initiate things that contradict what Akrout initiated and are biased against him. “Does this not negatively affect the image of the brave National Army?” he asked.
Al-Makki added that the initiative General Akrout had put forward to find a solution to the crisis in Tunisia “has political and partisan bias and not public positions,” and he called on him to maintain “some conservatism and be satisfied with public positions without a clear political bias.”
Al-Makki also affirmed that he could not prevent General Akrout from his constitutional right to practice politics, but he sufficed with advice and expressing opinion on Akrout’s initiative and assured him that “replacing the current political class can only be done in two ways:”
The first method is “calling for a national dialogue in which the participants determine where the national interest lies, including the ruling coalition,” and the second method is “calling for premature elections.”
Abd al-Latif al-Makki considered that the two methods must be completed “under the roof of the constitution and the law.” Therefore, it is better for Akrout to invest in the “philosophy of national rapprochement and harmony, and not vice versa by targeting partners in the homeland.”
Al-Makki stressed that dialogue or calling for elections requires compiling the word of the most important partners in order to fulfill the political, constitutional and legal conditions for their success, and considered that other than this approach will not be “but a push towards unknown and uncontrolled formulas, the best of which may be worse than what we are in” adding that “At the time of political crisis, acute attitudes do not work, and those eager for a solution do not push for them.”
It is worth noting that the retired Admiral Kamal Akrout decided to go into political life and had announced that he had issued a call for rescue because Tunisia could no longer tolerate further crises, calling on all political parties to abandon their narcissism and sit at the same dialogue table to find urgent solutions.
