The Assistant Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Union for Labour Sami Tahri confirmed today in a blog post on the social networking site “Facebook” that the working organization rejected an invitation from the U.S. Embassy in Tunis to meet with a delegation from Congress.
Tahri said Tunisian affairs are only resolved among Tunisians, stressing that the working organization will not accept the pressure lobbies exerted by The Masmoudi on behalf of Ennahda, according to the blog.
The People’s Movement and the Free Constitutional Party had earlier confirmed their refusal to invite the US embassy to attend the meeting.
In a statement on Friday, the People’s Movement party said it had received an invitation from U.S. Embassy MP Leila Haddad to attend a meeting with a delegation from the U.S. Congress, which will visit Tunisia.
In this regard, the movement reiterated its rejection of this call, reiterating its principled position of “protecting national sovereignty and not allowing any third party to interfere in national affairs”.
For its part, the Free Constitutional Party, in a statement on Friday, rejected this call from the U.S. Embassy, recalling that it had insisted on the removal of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), an American organization working to support democracy in the world and provide practical assistance to civilian and political leaders, in order to develop democratic values, practices and institutions. “removing it from parliament, parliamentary aides from a foreign party stopped interfering in legislative work, as well as demanded access to information on the subject, but party parliamentarians were confronted with a ban and blackout,” the statement said.
