On Thursday, May 13, 2021, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that Egypt, Tunisia and other countries in the region could play a role in the short term to calm the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
“The task, in the short term, is for Egypt, Tunisia and other important regional actors to play their role in conveying to the Hamas leadership the reasons for de-escalation as well as the benefits that will come from that,” Psaki said.
This comes after US President Joe Biden said that he had contacted Egypt and Saudi Arabia in order to reduce the escalation in Gaza, expecting more talks with the leaders of the region. Biden called for reducing the escalation in violence in the Middle East due to the intensification of the conflict in Gaza, saying that he wants to see a significant reduction in missile attacks.
