Today, Tuesday, September 14, 2021, 50 days have passed since the decisions of July 25, 2021, according to which the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, enacted Article 80 of the Constitution, with the suspension of Parliament’s powers and the dismissal of the Prime Minister from his duties.

After gaining noticeable popular support since that date, political and civil forces expressed their fears of Saied’s tendency towards autocracy and his seizure of all power, without the emergence of a clear role for a strong opposition.

Some do not Hold on to Freedom

In a statement to “JDD Tunisia”, the Vice-President of the Ennahda Movement, Ali Al-Arayedh, said that the positions that were issued were radical, considering that the July 25 decisions were a coup, a grave mistake or a violation of the constitution that would plunge the country into more political, economic and social crises.

Al-Arayedh stated that many parties that were waiting for the next steps of the president began to lose patience with the emergence of positions calling for acceleration, and even those who supported him began to review their positions in the direction of pushing for a return to the normal situation. Many, according to Al-Arayedh, also denounce the abuses related to preventing some officials and politicians from leaving the country, trials, closing Al Jazeera’s office, arrests and house arrest.

He added that most sectors and citizens began to become fussy and suspicious, pointing out that some political parties supported Saied out of gloating and some of them did not cling to freedom and now they have to bear their responsibilities, pointing out that it became clear to them that there are threats such as the accumulation of power and a total coup against the gains of the revolution.

He stressed that if these political parties do not wake up and form a real opposition, the country will lose a lot of time and will pay a very heavy price, as he put it.

Surreal Position

A leader in the (tahya tounes) “Long Live Tunisia movement”, the Frozen MP Mustafa Ben Ahmed, confirmed to “JDD Tunisia” that the opposition is created based on the existence of an effective rule, not a reading of the unseen, according to him. He said that, since the evening of July 25, the opposition has been drawn to extraordinary measures, expecting a miracle, but gradually a conviction was formed that there are no positions or programs that might be opposed.

Ben Ahmed added that the opposition is born in a normal political life based on continuous practice, while the situation in which Tunisia has been living for about two months, is unusual, unrealistic and surreal due to the failure of state institutions in an unconventional scene, which will result in an unconventional situation.
